History
Saint Sebastian was born in Narbonne, France, in 256 AD, but lived most of his life in Italy. It is believed that he enlisted in the Roman army with the mission of helping Christians who were being persecuted and mistreated by the Romans. When Emperor Diocletian discovered that Saint Sebastian was a Christian, he ordered him to be tied to a pole and killed with arrows. São Sebastião was found still alive by Irene, a devout Christian, who tended to his wounds. São Sebastião again confronted Diocletian for the barbaric deaths of Christians, but this time he did not escape with his life. Every year, on the 20th of January, homage is paid to São Sebastião.
