History
Martinho de Porres was born in Lima, Peru, in December 1579. His father was a Spanish nobleman and his mother a freed slave. His father abandoned him and his sister when they were very young, and his childhood was spent in poverty. When he was twelve, his father decided to take over the children and give them a good education. Although Martin was a devout Catholic, he had difficulty getting into a religious Order because he was mixed race. At the age of twenty-four, he became a lay brother of the Order of Preachers, where he remained until his death. Saint Martin is known to have performed many miracles throughout his life. He was able to heal people who were sick and help those most in need, regardless of race. He also loved and cared for animals. Her feast day is November 3rd.
