History
In the year 337, on a stormy autumn day, a Gallic knight named Martin was returning home, when a beggar appeared who asked him for alms. Martinho took off the mantle he had on his back and, with his sword, cut it in half and gave it to the beggar to shelter him from the cold. At that moment, a miracle happened. The storm stopped and the sun appeared in the sky shining. In the year 356, Martin left the army and dedicated himself to the Christian life. He spread the Christian faith throughout Gaul. His feast day is November 11th. Every year, around this time, autumn turns into summer. It is known as the “summer of Saint Martin”. In Portugal, people celebrate this day by eating roasted chestnuts.
