History
One day, in Valencia, Father Jofré saw some young people mistreating a mentally handicapped person. After this incident, he decided to build a shelter with a chapel, which he dedicated to Our Lady, under the name of Nossa Senhora dos Desamparados, to welcome and support the disabled. However, a statue was missing to place on top of the altar. Some time later, some young pilgrims appeared at the house of a confrere, who said they were sculptors and agreed to make a statue. They asked to be alone, without anyone visiting them. After three days, the pilgrims disappeared, but they left a beautiful statue of Our Lady with the baby Jesus in her lap. Many miracles are associated with this statue, including that of the confrere's wife, who was blind and paralyzed and was healed in front of the image. The pilgrims who carved the statue came to be considered angels. Nossa Senhora dos Desamparados is the patron saint of the city of Valencia, Spain.
