An acolyte or altar server is appointed by the Church to assist the priest. Participates in the altar service and assists during the celebration of Mass by carrying a processional cross, lighting or holding candles, and holding the Gospel book. He also assists in cleaning the altar, swings the censer, and has many other duties. The word acolyte derives from the Greek Akóloutos, and means to accompany on the path.
