History
The first pilgrimage that left Penafirme da Mata, parish of Olhalvo, towards the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, dates back to 1502. It is the oldest tradition in the municipality of Alenquer. The reasons that led to this pilgrimage remain unknown today, but it is believed that they are linked to the return of an inhabitant from the Discoveries, or to some calamity that must have devastated this region. The Círio de Nossa Senhora da Nazaré celebrates the fruitful virginity of the Most Holy Mary who brought the Author of life in her womb. Every year, on the 8th of September, thousands of faithful gather in the parish of Olhalvo to pay homage to Our Lady of Nazaré.
