History
Legend has it that, one day, a group of thieves approached a shepherd with the intention of stealing his sheep. The shepherd invoked the name of the Blessed Virgin who appeared mounted on a donkey and, turning day into night, prevented the flock from being taken to him. They say that, even today, you can see the footprints of the donkey in the granite.
When people found out about this miracle, they decided to build a chapel in honor of Nossa Senhora da Penha on the site of Pouso, but they were unable to because the works were mysteriously destroyed. It was then that they changed the building site of the chapel to where the apparition had taken place. And that's where the chapel is located, located at the top of the Serra de São Paulo, 1 km to the southwest of Castelo de Vide.
On the way up to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Penha, on the left side of the access staircase, people usually sit on a stone chair and say a quatrain:
“Chair of Our Lady,
Chair of my good;
Where did Our Lady sit?
I sit too”
It is believed that if you sit in the chair, lift your feet off the ground, and ask for three wishes without revealing them to anyone, those wishes come true.
