Iria was born in the middle of the 7th century, in the ancient city of Nabantia. Her beauty did not go unnoticed, and many courted her, including Friar Remígio, her spiritual monk, and Britaldo, son of the city's governor. But, from a very young age, Iria wanted to consecrate herself to God. Feeling rejected, Friar Remígio gave her an infusion that made her swell, appearing to be pregnant. Feeling that he was being betrayed, Britaldo had Iria killed while she was praying by the Nabão river. His body was dragged by the river to Santarém where, by a miracle, a tomb appeared and his body remained there. His feast day is October 20th.
