History
Vicente was a deacon of Zaragoza, Spain, who lived between the 3rd and 4th centuries. At that time, Emperors Diocletian and Maximian violently persecuted Christians, and Vincent was tortured to death.
In the 8th century, during the Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula, Vicente's body was placed on a boat adrift at sea, and found on the coast of Cabo de Sagres, today Cabo de São Vicente, in Portugal.
In the 12th century, when he conquered Lisbon, D. Afonso Henriques fulfilled his promise to find Vicente's remains. In 1173, the bones were transported on a ship from the Algarve to Lisbon. Legend has it that two crows accompanied and protected the ship throughout the journey.
It is for this reason that the ship and the two crows are very important symbols of the city of Lisbon, of which São Vicente is the patron saint. The feast day of São Vicente is January 22nd.
