History
In 1498, in the village of Lapa, municipality of Sernancelhe, Portugal, a shepherdess called Joana, found an image of Our Lady, among the crevices of a boulder. He built a small altar for him, decorated it with flowers, and paid homage to him every day. One day, Joana's mother told her to take the sheep to other pastures where they could be better fed. Joana put the image in her little basket and took it with her. Joana's mother, seeing her devote so much time to what she thought was a doll, grabbed the image and threw it into the fire. The girl, who was mute from birth, screamed at her mother and managed to remove the image from the fire without getting burned. Joana's mother had her arm paralyzed but, after praying a lot, she was healed. All these miracles led to the erection of a chapel in honor of Nossa Senhora da Lapa, next to the boulder where the image was found. Later, the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Lapa was built by order of the Fathers of the Society of Jesus. Every year, on the 10th of June, the 15th of August, and the first Sunday of September, thousands of pilgrims gather to pay homage to Nossa Senhora da Lapa.
