History
João Heitor de Brito was born in 1647 into a Christian family in Lisbon, Portugal. From an early age he showed a huge desire to dedicate his life to spreading the word of God. At fourteen he entered the Society of Jesus and at twenty-six he was ordained a priest. At the same time, he traveled to India as an evangelizing missionary. Over the years he was in India, he was the target of torture and persecution but he never stopped preaching the Gospel with courage and determination. He was killed in 1697. São João de Brito was beatified by Pope Pius IX in 1852 and canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1947. His feast day is February 4th.
