History
The Festa dos Tabuleiros takes place in Tomar, every four years, at the beginning of July.
Some historians are of the opinion that it began as a festival in honor of the goddess Ceres, the goddess of harvests and fertility. Later, in the 14th century, the feast was instituted by King D. Dinis and Queen Santa Isabel, as a form of worship to the Holy Spirit.
On these festive days, thousands of people attend the traditional Parade, the Parade of the Boys, the Cortejo dos Mordomos and the Partial Parade of the Boards. There are also the Arraiais, the Popular Games and the Pêza, which is the sharing of bread and meat by the populations.
In the Main Parade, the girls wear a white dress, a colored ribbon crossed on their chest and waist, and they carry a Tray on their heads. Each Tray must be as tall as the girl carrying it and is made up of thirty loaves, placed on five or six canes which, in turn, are fitted into a wicker or wicker basket, covered with a white embroidered cloth. At the top of each Board is placed the Dove of the Holy Spirit or the Cross of Christ. The board is also decorated with ears of corn, a sign of fertility, and paper flowers, usually poppies.
