History
Legend has it that north of the village of Avelar, in a place called Fetal, a beautiful girl appeared to shepherds, but when they approached, the girl disappeared. The apparition was considered a miracle and soon a chapel was built where an image of the Virgin Mary was placed. Thousands of faithful began to visit Avelar and the donation of alms gave rise, in 1767, to a new chapel. At the top of a staircase was built an oven that was heated for three days so that, on the day of the feast, a huge cake was baked. In those days, there was a man who entered the oven carrying the flour to make the cake in his hands and, in his mouth, a carnation taken from the Virgin's litter. And the “miracle” happened because he always came out unharmed, without burns. Every year, on the first weekend of September, the village of Avelar welcomes thousands of people who come together to participate in the festivities in honor of Nossa Senhora da Guia.

Returns
