History
According to tradition, the image of Our Lady of Nazareth was carved by Saint Joseph in Nazareth, Palestine, when Jesus was still a baby. In the 4th century the image was taken by the Greek monk Ciríaco to the Monastery of Cauliniana, near Mérida, and in the 8th century it came to Portugal by the hands of D. Rodrigo and Friar Romano, where it was hidden in a cave until 1182. placed in a chapel built by D. Fuas Roupinho, mayor of Porto de Mós Castle, as a way of thanking Our Lady for having saved him from falling over a cliff while trying to hunt a deer.
Nowadays, the image is in the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré and is venerated, every year, by thousands of people.
