History
Nossa Senhora da Agonia is the patron saint of fishermen in the city of Viana do Castelo, in Portugal. The name “Agonia” comes from the struggle that fishermen had to fight to survive the rough and dangerous sea in that area. Their families watched the fishermen fight from the pier, and prayed to Our Lady to protect them and bring them home safe and sound. Devotion to Our Lady of Agony began in 1674 when her image was placed in the Chapel of Bom Jesus do Santo Sepulcro do Calvário. Nowadays, the name of Nossa Senhora da Agonia is associated with the Pilgrimage in honor of Nossa Senhora da Agonia. The pilgrimage began in 1772 and is now known as one of the biggest popular Portuguese festivals. The party takes place every year on the week of the 20th of August, a municipal holiday, and is the queen of pilgrimages in Portugal!
