History
Devotion to Our Lady of Relief began in 1798, when the first Sanctuary was built in her honor, at the request of Father Francisco Fragoas. Father Francisco was a very kind and charitable man. One day, he became very ill and, already without strength, asked Our Lady to heal him, promising to build him a temple. Some time later, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared in her room and answered her prayers. Father Francisco then fulfilled his promise. Every year, thousands of faithful gather in the parish of Soutelo, Portugal, to participate in the festivities in honor of Nossa Senhora do Alívio, which take place on the second and third Sundays of September. How can you thank the love that Our Lady has for you?
