History
Devotion to Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel, also known as Nossa Senhora da Pedra Mua, began in 1410 when, one day, two old men, one from Caparica and the other from Alcabideche, guided by the same dream, discovered the image of Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel. Cabo, at the end of Cabo Espichel. The news quickly spread and the chapel of Santa Maria do Cabo, currently known as Ermida da Memória, was built in that location.
In 1430, the annual Círios (processions) began, whose origin is due to an epidemic that devastated the outskirts of Lisbon. In 1432, thirty parishes instituted the annual “giro”, also called “Círio dos Saloios”. Each parish would annually and in turn pay homage to Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel. Nowadays, there are twenty six parishes that continue to give life to this tradition.
