History
Isabel was born in 1270 in Zaragoza, Spain. She was the daughter of Pedro III the Great and Dona Constança de Sicily. She married D. Dinis in 1282 and went to live in Coimbra. Isabel was always very kind, protective and helpful to the most unprotected and needy, but D. Dinis did not approve of this proximity to the people. One day, hiding from her husband, she put bread in her mantle to distribute to the poorest. D. Dinis surprised her and asked her what she was carrying on her lap. Isabel replied: “They are roses, sir!”. “Roses? In January?" doubted the king. And the miracle happened. The queen opened her mantle, and instead of bread, beautiful roses fell. Throughout her life, the Holy Queen ordered the construction of hospitals, institutions to welcome and help the poor and sick, and shelters for women. In 1516 she was beatified by Pope Leo X and in 1625 she was canonized by Pope Urban VIII.
