History
Joana was born in 1452 in Lisbon, Portugal. She was the daughter of King Afonso V and Queen D. Isabel. Since she was a child, Joana has shown to have a great religious vocation and, despite several marriage proposals, she decided to consecrate herself to God. When she was twenty years old, she entered the Convent of Jesus of Aveiro of the Dominican order, where she died in 1490. As she was very generous and helped the poorest and most needy people, she was considered by the people as a saint. Joana was beatified in 1693 by Pope Innocent XII, and in 1965 Pope Paul VI declared her protector of Aveiro. His feast day is May 12th.
