History:
Paula Frassinetti was born in 1809 in Genoa, Italy. When she was nineteen, Paula went to live with her brother José, parish priest of the village of Quinto al Mare, in Liguria. There he knew that he wanted to consecrate his life to God and education. In 1834, together with six women, he founded the Filhas da Santa Fé Religious Community. The enthusiasm, dedication and strength of these women allowed them to open a parish school for poor children, in which they taught. Shortly thereafter, the Daughters of Santa Fe were renamed Sisters of Santa Doroteia after adopting the Pia Obra de Santa Doroteia, which was created fundamentally to support the youngest and poor and needy people. Her work extended to various Italian regions, and in 1866 the first missionary Sisters went to Brazil, and soon after to Portugal. Today, the Sisters of Saint Dorotea are present all over the world. Paula Frassinetti was beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1930, and canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1984. Her feast day is June 11, and she is the patron saint of the sick.
