History
Iñigo López de Loyola was born in 1491 in Azpeitia, Spain.
When he was thirty years old, he was seriously wounded in the battle of Pamplona and, during the long process of recovery, he studied philosophical texts and learned a lot about the life of Jesus. In 1522 he gave up the life he had to dedicate himself to God, to the conversion of Muslims, and to spreading and teaching the Catholic faith.
He was one of the founders of the Society of Jesus, in 1534. The members of the Society of Jesus are called Jesuits. Ignatius of Loyola died in 1556 in Rome, Italy.
He was beatified by Pope Paul V in 1609, and canonized by Pope Gregory XV in 1622.
The feast day of Saint Ignatius of Loyola is July 31st.
