History
Saint Dominic was born in 1170 into a wealthy family in Spain. Before he was born, his mother had a dream. She dreamed of a dog running through the world with a burning torch in its mouth. This dog would end up representing Saint Dominic's enormous desire to help people get closer to Jesus. Saint Dominic became a priest and went to the south of France. While there, he met many people who abandoned the faith. Saint Dominic decided to spend the rest of his life preaching and leading people back to Jesus. He started a new religious order to help preach and teach the faith. This order was called the Order of Preachers, or Dominicans. Many men and women entered the Order and became priests and nuns, helping Saint Dominic to bring people all over Europe back to the faith. It is said that Mary appeared to St. Dominic and gave him a rosary. When St. Dominic died in 1221, Dominicans were already scattered across Europe, pursuing their desire to preach and teach the faith and love of Jesus. His feast day is August 8th.
