History
João de La Salle was born into a wealthy family in 1651 in Reims, France. When he was twenty-seven years old he was ordained a priest and two years later he received the title of Doctor of Theology. At that time, only the richest had access to education. Not resigned to this situation, João de La Salle decided to found, in 1684, the Congregation of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, fundamentally dedicated to the education of the poorest children. In the same year, he created the first school for teachers. Jean de La Salle was a pioneer in many areas of education, and today the De La Salle Brothers' Schools are spread all over the world.
He was beatified in 1888 and canonized in 1900 by Pope Leo XIII. His feast day is April 7th.
