History
Saint Matthew was one of the disciples of Jesus and was known for having written one of the Gospels where he relates His life and His teachings. Every year, on the weekend around September 21, thousands of pilgrims moved by faith gather in São Mateus. It is one of the biggest pilgrimages in the region of Baixo-Mondego, Gândaras and northern Estremadura. This homage dates back to the 12th century with the construction of a hermitage near the town of Soure, on the hill of São Mateus.
