History
São Torcato was born into a noble Roman family named Torquatus, in the city of Guimarães, in Portugal.
In 693, at the XVI Council of Toledo, São Torcato proved to be an eloquent and very knowledgeable person, and was acclaimed Archbishop of Braga. Later he was also Archbishop of Porto and Dume.
On February 26, 715 or 719, while trying to stop the Muslim invasion, São Torcato was killed by General Musa, who had been sent from Tarik to conquer the Iberian Peninsula and convert Christians to Islam.
The legend says that his body was found intact under a pile of stones, in the middle of brambles. When they removed the body, there was no water to wash it but, miraculously, a source of water was born, known as the Fonte de São Torcato (Fountain of the Saint). A chapel was built in his honor on the same site. His body is currently buried in a glass chamber in the Sanctuary of São Torcato.
